How to start a home based service business

home based service business

Starting a home based service based business is the quickest way to start a side business because it's based on the skills you already have. Be aware though, that a service business, trades time for money. However, it is a business model that can earn you money quickly, with relatively few set up costs. If you enjoy working with people, and have specialized knowledge or experience in a particular area, you should consider getting into a service business.

Here are a few tips for getting your home based service based business up and running quickly:

1. Choose a business with client potential

Are there people who would pay for your specialized knowledge or skills? Before you start, you need to be sure your business is in demand. Examples of in-demand services include:

  • Copywriting
  • Content or ghostwriting
  • Virtual assistant
  • Website design
  • Search engine optimization
  • Bookkeeping/Accounting
  • Social networking
  • Childcare
  • Pet care
2. Set up a website right away
A website serves as an office for the side business owner who doesn't have a physical office. It tells people why they need your service, gives them a way to contact you, and let them know if they can afford you. More on creating a website here.

3. Ask people you know for referrals
If you know somebody might be in touch with your ideal client base, ask for referrals. Also, ask the clients you acquire for referrals. Satisfied clients are an amazing source of new clientele.

4. Do a great job, but don't overload yourself
Remember, you are getting paid for the time you work with your clients, but a business has other obligations as well. You need to schedule time (or hire someone) for administrative tasks, such as marketing, bookkeeping, networking, etc.

5. Find ways to create passive income
In a service business, you're working with people for your primary source of income – meaning if you're not working, you're not making any money. With a service business, your profits and client base can fluctuate, it's the dreaded feast or famine syndrome. If you don't continue to work at it, your clientele can dry up. If you have a means of earning income even when you're not working, it eases the amount you have to work.
