6 Compelling Reasons to Outsource

If you want a balanced life, finding a way to manage your work effectively is the major reason to outsource. Other reasons include:

When to outsource: You don't want to work alone anymore

One of the most important lessons you learn as a small business owner is that you can't grow your business alone. If you're working alone and you don't outsource projects to others, then you don’t have a business — you have a job. You're stuck — you can't get sick, have an accident or go on vacation, if you're the only one who can run your business. Being the only one who can run your business is often the quickest way to overwork, stress and could lead to burnout.

When to outsource: You want to concentrate more on growing your business

If you’re the only one doing the client work in your business, you often don't have enough time to do the tasks like sales, marketing or networking which are necessary to bring in more clients. If your business doesn't bring in new clients, or returning clients with more business, your business can’t make money.

When to outsource: You want more free time

You won't be tied down by the number of hours you can work in a week. You may be able to only work 20 hours a week, but if you hire three contractors and each of them works 10 hours a week for you, you'll be able to complete 50 hours of work per week. Outsourcing also means that the time you would have spent working can be spent elsewhere.

When to outsource: You want to maintain quality

When you outsource, you can hand off portions of your projects, or even the whole project and take a supervisory role, freeing up your time to grow your business, while still maintaining quality and timeliness. If more than one person is working on the project and each person is focusing on what he or she is good at, the project quality is better and the deadlines are easier to meet.

When to outsource: You want your business to become more cost efficient

When you bill your client, you'll charge for the time your subcontractor spent working and for the time you spent managing the project. If you pick a contractor who charges less than you would have, you can pass those savings to your client (after adding a management fee of course!).

When to outsource: You want to expand your business

Outsourcing to a contractor with a complementary skill set can also help you expand your services. For example, if you specialize in writing blog posts for your clients, you could hire a web design contractor to help those same clients set up new sites or change the design of existing ones. This way, the client can continue to work with you and you can meet more of the client’s needs. The major reason to outsource? You enjoy a growth in income without having to work at it yourself! As your business grows, you can serve clients that you would have had to turn away if you were working by yourself.
